Transforming Education: Badi-ud-din Mahmud’s Reforms as Minister

  Badi-ud-din Mahmud was a highly respected Sri Lankan Muslim educationist, politician, and statesman who made lasting contributions to the development of education and the empowerment of the Muslim community in Sri Lanka. Educated at Zahira College, Colombo, and later at Al-Azhar University in Egypt, he was a scholar deeply rooted in both Islamic and secular knowledge. Mahmud served as the Minister of Education and Broadcasting in the governments of S.W.R.D. Bandaranaike and Sirimavo Bandaranaike. As Minister, he introduced significant reforms that transformed the education sector in Sri Lanka. He was responsible for the establishment of hundreds of Muslim schools, the introduction of Islamic religious education in public schools, and the expansion of educational opportunities for minority communities. He was also a founding figure of Muslim cultural and educational organizations, helping to shape the identity and unity of Sri Lankan Muslims during a crucial period in the nation's post independence history. His efforts ensured that Muslim students gained access to both religious and modern education, fostering future generations of professionals and leaders. Badi-ud-din Mahmud passed away in 1997. He is remembered as a visionary and reformer whose dedication to education, community development, and national harmony left an enduring legacy in Sri Lanka.

 The Enduring Legacy of Dr. A.M.M. Sahabdeen: Scholar, Civil Servant, and Philanthropist

Dr. Abdul Majeed Mohamed Sahabdeen, affectionately known as A.M.M. Sahabdeen,  distinguished Sri Lankan civil servant, scholar, and philanthropist. He was born into a family with a strong educational background. After completing his education at the University of Ceylon with honors, he joined the elite Ceylon Civil Service. Throughout his career, he held several senior administrative positions, including Secretary, Director, Commissioner, and Chairman of various important government organizations until his retirement in 1973. Even after retirement, he continued to serve the government in various capacities, such as a member of the Public Service Commission and several presidential commissions on taxation, finance, and banking. Dr. Sahabdeen was deeply committed to the educational and social development of Sri Lanka. In 1979, he established the A.M.M. Sahabdeen Trust Foundation, a non-profit organization aimed at promoting education and social welfare. The foundation was incorporated by Act of Parliament No. 3 of 1991 and is listed in the International Foundation Directory. Under his leadership, the foundation initiated several programs to honor individuals and institutions that have made significant contributions to human development, science, international peace, literature, and the arts. The Mohamed Sahabdeen Awards, established in 1992, recognize outstanding achievements in these fields. Dr. Sahabdeen was also an accomplished author and scholar. One of his notable works is The Sufi Doctrine in Tamil Literature, published in 1986, which earned him a Doctorate in Philosophy from the University of Peradeniya. His academic contributions reflect his deep understanding of literature and philosophy. Dr. Sahabdeen's legacy is marked by his unwavering dedication to public service, education, and the promotion of peace and harmony in Sri Lanka. His work continues to inspire future generations to contribute positively to society. The A.M.M. Sahabdeen Trust Foundation remains a testament to his vision and commitment to the betterment of the nation.

From Classrooms to Communities: The Multifaceted Legacy of Dr. Uvais Ahmed 

  Dr. M. Uvais Ahmed was a respected Sri Lankan educator and community leader who made significant contributions to both national education and the Muslim community. He held a BA in English, Economics, and Philosophy from the University of Sri Jayewardenepura, a postgraduate diploma in Applied Linguistics from the University of Edinburgh, and a PhD in Education from Columbia Pacific University. Dr. Ahmed served as the principal of Zahira College in Gampola and Colombo, and played key roles in curriculum development, teacher education, and educational media. He was also the Director of the Sri Lanka College of Journalism. Beyond his professional work, he was actively involved in community service, founding the Iqra Technical College and the Renaissance Movement of Sri Lanka, and serving as Chairman of the Mosque Committee in China Fort, Beruwala. His legacy continues to inspire those committed to education and community development in Sri Lanka

Mohamed Naleem Hajiar – Building a Community Through Knowledge and Charity

 Mohamed Ismail Mohamed Naleem Hajiar (4 April 1933 – 26 September 2005) was a prominent Sri Lankan Muslim philanthropist and community leader whose contributions significantly uplifted the Muslim community. One of his most enduring legacies is the establishment of the Naleemiah Institute of Islamic Studies in Beruwala in 1973. The institute was founded to provide higher Islamic education while integrating modern academic subjects, producing scholars and professionals capable of serving both religious and national needs. It has since become a leading center for Islamic learning in Sri Lanka, offering degree programs in Islamic studies, Arabic, and allied disciplines. Naleem Hajiar also funded numerous madrasas, mosques, and welfare projects across the country, and he provided scholarships and financial assistance to underprivileged Muslim students. His dedication to education, religious guidance, and social welfare has left a lasting impact, and he is remembered as a visionary who used his wealth and influence for the betterment of his community and country. Beyond education, he played a pivotal role in promoting economic development by supporting small businesses, creating employment opportunities, and investing in sustainable initiatives. As a successful gem trader, he used his business acumen not only to expand his enterprises but also to uplift others, becoming a model of ethical entrepreneurship rooted in Islamic values. Naleem Hajiar was also deeply involved in interfaith and national unity efforts, often advocating for peaceful coexistence and mutual respect among Sri Lanka’s diverse communities. His contributions earned him national recognition, including honorary titles and respect across ethnic and religious boundaries. His life’s work exemplifies how wealth and leadership can be harnessed selflessly for education, spirituality, and social justice. Today, his legacy continues through the institutions he built and the countless lives he touched through his acts of generosity and vision.

 Z.A.M. Reffai Hajiar: Businessman, Philanthropist, and Community Leader

Z.A.M. Reffai Hajiar was a successful businessman and generous philanthropist who used his wealth to benefit both the Muslim community and wider society in Sri Lanka. He funded and donated numerous mosques, Islamic schools (madrasas), and community centers that served as important hubs for religious and social activities. Additionally, he supported healthcare and welfare projects and donated land for religious and educational institutions, helping preserve traditions and improve community welfare. His wealth largely came from his involvement in the gem trade. With his expertise and business acumen, Reffai Hajiar became a respected figure in both local and international gem markets. This success allowed him to fund many charitable projects and greatly contribute to the development of the Muslim community. Through his combined efforts in business and philanthropy, Z.A.M. Reffai Hajiar played a key role in advancing the economic and social well being of Sri Lankan Muslims.
